Spar stores in the south west of England have reached a milestone in saving thousands of meals from going to waste on the date that marks International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (29 September).

Appleby Westward, the regional distribution company for Spar stores in the region, operates 111 company-owned stores, and 49 of these took part in the United Nations initiative to reduce food loss and waste.

The scheme works by offering customers ‘magic bags’ of stock which is close to its best before date and reduced in price.

Dean Mason, the firm’s company-owned stores director, said: “We are proud to announce that we have now saved over 6,000 meals from going to waste through the Too Good To Go campaign, which is the equivalent of over 2.5 million smartphone charges of CO2 saved.”

The campaign is running in 16 countries across the world with the message that reducing food waste is the number one solution to combating climate change.
