Prime minister Boris Johnson should not ignore small shops as he proceeds with plans to level up the country, said the NFRN (National Federation of Retail Newsagents).

The plea comes ahead of a speech by Johnson which is expected to underline that the regeneration of high streets will be an important part of government regeneration strategy.

Stuart Reddish, NFRN national president, said: “While this move is to be welcomed, we would call on the prime minister to widen his plans beyond the high street.

“Shops away from the high street, such as those in local parades, have had a tough time during lockdown.

“The lengths and breadths that small shops have gone to in keeping their customers fed and safe has been extraordinary, but many are fighting for survival.”

Johnson is due to talk about a more balanced economy in his speech and putting local needs at the top of the government’s agenda.
