The retailer says the decision has been made “in recognition of the extraordinary efforts of colleagues throughout a challenging 18 months since the start of the pandemic”.
It means the retailer’s supermarkets, convenience outlets and petrol stations will remain shut on 26 December after being closed on Christmas Day.
Chief executive Simon Roberts said: “Christmas is a really special time for so many, but because of lockdown restrictions last year, lots of us weren’t able to celebrate in the way we wanted.”
It follows the example of Morrisons, Marks & Spencer and Waitrose which have already announced they will not be trading on 26 December this time around.
Usdaw general secretary Paddy Lillis called on other multiple retailers to follow suit. “Key workers have done so much this year and we don’t think it is too much to ask to give them the longest possible break over the festive season.
“We now hope that other retailers will follow Sainsbury’s lead by closing on 26 December to help workers enjoy their Christmas.”
