Having run the shop for 34 years, Anita Nye, owner of Premier Eldred Drive Store, Orpington, Kent, has developed a bond with her local community that goes way beyond the usual retailer-customer relationship.

She provides free fruit for kids and works closely with the local school to dissuade truancy.

The team also keeps an active lookout for our elderly customers, particularly in the winter, knocking on doors to check they are OK and if they need anything delivered.

The store has also launched a “Snack-smart Club” rewarding children every time they buy a healthy snack under 100 calories (confectionery not included).

“This is a heart-warming entry from a retailer who clearly goes above and beyond to help her customers,” said a judge.

“She and her team have supported the elderly and the hard-hit while doing their bit to help the community understand the importance of healthy eating.”

Another judge added: “The amount of time and energy this store puts into community support is outstanding. This retailer is something else.”
