Facial recognition payment terminal could replace the need for cards

Face recognition technology could be how customers pay in shops in future, says a Dutch technology company.

VisionLabs has launched a biometric payment system – the Luna POS terminal – which enables both traditional card payments and facial recognition in one device.

The face-recognition technology is already being successfully used, says the company.

Anton Nazarkin, global business development director at VisionLabs, said: “We introduced our first generation of LUNA POS with no credit card support in 2019 to simply try out the face-based payment process.

“It quickly turned out that the adoption rate of this technology exceeded our expectations: we have recorded a conversion rate upwards of 40% to face payments among different types of major national banks and retailers.”

The company said it developed the terminal as a response to the pandemic, which has accelerated the shift to biometric contactless payment methods.

While some banks are already using smartphone-supported facial recognition to authenticate online payments, VisionLabs believes this not enough to satisfy the growing demand for safer and more secure ways to pay, contact-free.

VisionLabs argues that facial recognition payments offer consumers a quick, convenient and more secure alternative to traditional card payments.

The terminal works by scanning the customer’s face, just like a smartphone using facial recognition.

The picture is then sent to the payment service provider for verification and payment can be taken.

The terminal is designed so that it cannot save any facial data.
