Online giant Amazon is continuing its drive into the UK grocery market with the opening of its eighth till-free convenience outlet in London.

The 2,500sq ft Amazon Fresh store in High Holborn welcomed its first shoppers yesterday (24 November) who used an app to enter, did their food shopping and then received an email receipt.

They were then billed for their purchases using their Amazon account.

The company has been building its presence in grocery retailing this year since opening its first outlet in March and is said to have ambitious plans for expansion, with one report claiming it is aiming to establish a UK estate of up to 260 outlets.

In addition to its eight food outlets across the capital, it also operates two general stores that use the same technology to speed up the shopping process.

A growing number of retailers are recognizing the need to prepare for a till-free future in some of their convenience outlets.

Last month, Tesco opened its first GetGo till-free outlet in the same area of London – with more to come if the concept proves a success with convenience shoppers.
