Aldi ends Deliveroo partnership

Aldi has ended its home delivery trial with Deliveroo because easing coronavirus restrictions mean customers are returning to its stores.

Aldi linked up with the delivery app last spring when customer demand for deliveries surged.

About 100 of Aldi’s 950 UK stores offered the service.

The retailer says it has ditched the service because many customers have now returned to shopping in person.

The move underlines recent industry data from the Office for National Statistics that suggest online shopping is falling month on month compared with the height of the pandemic.

There is also evidence that some of the big supermarkets are starting to set up their own rapid delivery services rather than rely on outside companies. This has been the case with Tesco’s Whoosh and Sainsbury’s Chop Chop.

Aldi has decided to focus on its click-and-collect service, which is available at more than 200 of its stores.

Customers can still buy special buy products and wines and spirits online for home delivery.
