The NFRN has welcomed the announcement by newspaper publisher JPI that when it increases the prices of its titles the amount paid to retailers will also go up.

The decision by JPI comes just after another newspaper publisher, Newsquest, put up its prices last month but cut the percentage it paid to newsagents.

JPI will be keeping the percentage paid to retailers at the same level, which will mean they will receive a pro-rata rise in income.

JPI’s increases, which come into effect next Monday (22 November) will put up the prices of its daily and weekly papers in the northwest of England and Yorkshire by 10p and 5p respectively.

The NFRN criticised last month’s decision by Newsquest but expressed thanks that JPI had chosen to make sure its newsagents also saw the benefit of the price rise.

NFRN head of news and Connect Brian Murphy said: “We would like to acknowledge that JPI Media has also chosen the correct route for maintaining retailer support of its publications, and we welcome a continued close working relationship with them.”
