Too Good To Go lets consumers buy surplus food from businesses to stop it from going to waste. Consumers simply download the free Too Good To Go app and search for nearby businesses with unsold food. They then purchase a ‘Magic Bag’ of surplus food and collect it at an allotted time.

The app’s community of users and partner businesses – including Blakemore Retail, BP, Budgens, Costcutter, EG Group, James Hall, and Nisa – have saved 12.5 million tons of C02e from going to waste. That’s equivalent to the average yearly C02e emissions of 1,471 UK citizens. It also equates to the same C02e needed to power 2,461 around the world flights or a staggering 76 years of continuous hot showering.

To date the app now has 5.7 million registered users and over 12,800 partner food businesses signed up to fight food waste.

Jamie Crummie, Too Good To Go’s co-founder, said: “I’m delighted to have hit this amazing milestone of five million Magic Bags saved just as we reach our fifth birthday here in the UK. It’s been incredible to see Too Good To Go grow in its presence and impact since 2016. We’ve seen a huge shift in consumers’ understanding of the impact our lifestyles have on the environment and it’s encouraging to see fighting food waste become a major part of this. But although five million Magic Bags sounds like a lot (and it is!), it’s still just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to food waste.

“Globally, a third of all food produced goes to waste and so there is still much more we can do. By making small and simple changes in our life – from the way we cook and use ingredients at home, to the way we do our food shop – we can all help pave the way for a brighter and greener future.”
