Earlier this month Spar stores in Abronhill, Garthamlock, Thornliebank and Erskine worked with HLS staff to distribute fruit to every primary school child in their areas.

Now Spar is planning to do the same with stores in the east of Scotland from the beginning of next year.

Colin McLean, chief executive of Spar Scotland, said: “We enjoy supporting Healthy Living Scotland’s programme which connects local school children with healthy options available from Spar convenience stores.

“It is important that we continue to encourage children to eat fresh fruit and vegetables.”

The Healthy Living Programme has been working with convenience retailers since 2004 and highlights the fresh fruit and vegetables and the healthier products available in convenience stores.

The programme is fully funded by the Scottish government and aims to connect local schools with convenience retailers.

So far they have engaged with more than 13,000 school children across the country.
