The existing store has been refurbished ahead of the new academic year with a large number of self-service tills.

The store is operated by the students union and provides jobs for some students as well as enabling all those at the university to buy their groceries.

Students get a 10% discount at the Co-op through a National Union of Students (NUS) scheme.

Martin Rogers, head of new channels at Co-op, said: “Our university franchise stores are a great opportunity for us to grow our brand, share our values, and get our products into the hands of the next generation of customers and members and as the exclusive retail grocery store franchise partner for the NUS we’re already serving around 150,000 students up and down the country.

“We’re delighted to add Keele to our ever-growing portfolio and to welcome these students and community.”
