One Stop, the Tesco-owned convenience chain, said today it has donated the equivalent of a million food bank meals since last year.

One Stop has worked with several organisations that combat food poverty, including Fareshare, Olio and Too Good to Go.

Fareshare works by providing donated food to the vulnerable with One Stop among those retailers that has collection points in its stores and also raises money for the charity. One Stop has raised £100,000 over the last year alone.

Olio and Too Good to Go are both apps to offer local communities food that is close to its sell by date.

Olio collects food and redistributes it directly, while Too Good to Go offers the chance for surplus food to be sold at discounted rates in “magic bags”.

One Stop had a trial of both these apps last year and then decided to roll them out across all its stores.

Neil Thomas, One Stop’s head of transformation, said: “As a company, we believe in the many social and environmental benefits of eliminating unnecessary food waste.

“The partnerships we have formed will allow us to effectively redistribute this food and strive towards this goal.”

One Stop now hopes to make a significant contribution to Olio and Fareshare’s campaign to redistribute 200 million meals over the next year.
