Independents’ Day UK, the culmination of the annual campaign to promote small, independent retail businesses, takes place this weekend.

Thousands of independents across the country are expected to take part in the event – which encourages consumers to shop at a local, small independent retailer – using special offers, promotions, and collaborating with other businesses in their communities to entice consumers in-store.

Trudy Davies of Woosnam & Davies a newsagent that caters for 2,500 people in Llanidloes in Powys, Mid-Wales, said: “I’ll be highlighting shopping locally and reminding people how much we do for the community.

“We’ve got to keep reminding people of how important small shops are in communities, and how they pulled through when the big guns took a while to get up to scratch with things like delivery, while we were there from day one.”

Around 100 local councils, chambers of commerce, and business improvement districts are participating.
