Northern Ireland’s retailers’ association has welcomed the government’s decision to extend the time in which the Spend Local card could be spent.

The extension of the period in which the card has been used has been made because the last of the cards are still in the post to those that applied for them.

The £100 card has been handed out free to Northern Ireland residents in an effort to boost business for local shops in the wake of the pandemic.

The original expiry date was the end of November and it has already been extended once to ensure that people had a chance to spend the money.

Retail NI’s chief executive Glyn Roberts said he welcomed the further extension.

He said: “Given that ten thousand cards are out for delivery, the Minister made the right call to extend the deadline by five days to give shoppers more time to spend.

We want to see as many cards being spent with our members as possible and hope that this extension will be a further boost to them.”
