The store in Oxford Street, Barrow-in-Furness, has partnered with Gander, an app which helps customers that sign up to see real-time price cuts on food that is reduced to clear.

They can then go to the store, save money on reduced products and help reduce the quantity of food thrown away.

Owner Karen Stephenson, who runs the store with husband Paul, said: “We have a really big fresh range in the store which means there is a risk of high levels of waste, especially as it is still early days and shoppers are getting used to what we stock and so we are still tailoring the range.

“The Gander app works really well at a local level. When reductions are made in store, customers are alerted and can then pop in to get their bargain.

“As well as highlighting savings to our local community it also helps to reduce waste and the amount of food going to landfills so the store and our customers are able to play a small part in sustainability and tackling the global issue of climate change.”

Because the app updates in real time products disappear from it as soon as they are sold.
