Northern Ireland’s retailers’ association has welcomed the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions announced this week, although it is now calling for more detailed planning for the return to normal working.

The easing of restrictions outlined on Thursday (20 January) included cutting the period of isolation for those with Covid to five days from seven; the removal of the requirement to provide proof of exemption from mask-wearing; and social distancing rules being eased.

Retail NI chief executive Glyn Roberts said: “These decisions are a significant step forward and it is to be welcomed that the Executive has now set out a roadmap for the lifting of restrictions.

“Retail NI repeats our call for the Executive to set out a clear plan for the safe and timely return of public and private sector staff to their offices and workplaces.

“This will be a significant challenge and will require extensive planning but will be important to boost footfall for our high streets, reopening our economy and return our society to near as normal.”
