Selfridges, the iconic British department store, is ushering in a new era of sustainable retail with its ambitious plan to ensure 45% of transactions come from circular products and services by 2030. This commitment will be realised through its Reselfridges ecosystem, encompassing Resale, Rental, Repair, Refill, and Recycle services. In a bid to showcase its dedication to sustainability, Selfridges is hosting “Worn Again”, a season of secondhand and circular shopping experiences, from April to August this year.

“Worn Again” offers a plethora of collaborative events, products, and services available in Selfridges’ London, Manchester, and Birmingham stores, as well as online. The innovative programme aims to extend the life of products and increase the desirability of secondhand and circular goods. By creating engaging and enjoyable experiences, Selfridges is demonstrating that sustainable shopping can become an integral part of retail design.

A key feature of the season is The Edit by Reselfridges, a fashion and lifestyle destination offering a unique way to shop secondhand. Designed by Liverpool-based architects Mutt, The Edit showcases a curated selection of products chosen by Selfridges buyers and sourced exclusively by Reselfridges’ global network of resellers and archivists. The visually appealing space highlights the importance of incorporating sustainable retail design into the overall shopping experience.

Marine Serre, a groundbreaking fashion brand known for its focus on regeneration, is part of “Worn Again” with an exclusive atelier concept. Taking up residence in Selfridges London’s Corner Shop, Marine Serre has transformed the space into a creative “atelier” experience, complete with vintage furniture upholstered with crescent moons and exclusive pieces from her State of Soul SS23 collection. The Corner Shop will also host a series of workshops dedicated to regenerative design and creation, showcasing the intersection of sustainability and innovative retail design.

Coach, the American luxury fashion company, has also joined the sustainable retail movement with its new sub-brand, Coachtopia, focused on circular craft. The pop-up in Selfridges’ Concept Store showcases the brand’s vision for the future of fashion and commitment to circularity. The visually striking Coachtopia Ergo bags, an iconic 90s silhouette reimagined using recycled materials, are exclusively available in the UK at Selfridges.

Other features of the “Worn Again” season include a Swap Shop series, Made to Order reimagined as Made In Selfridges, an outdoor furniture fair, and a reimagined Stock Market in the Corner Shop. These initiatives further highlight the potential of integrating sustainability and innovative retail design.

Permanent additions to Reselfridges include Subscription and Rent to Buy services. The new “Buy Now” feature on Selfridges Rental allows customers to purchase selected rental items, while “Rent to Buy” offers the option to purchase an item being rented if customers decide they would like to keep it for continued use. Furthermore, Reselfridges Rental Subscription, a new bag-focused rental service, enables customers to receive a different designer bag each month.
