Eco-friendly, playful and far from your ordinary balance bike

Harmoniously blending function with style and imagination as well as focusing on fabricating objects that are anything but boring, Bored Eye crafts ‘Sweep’ as their recent submission to Render Weekly – a conceptual children’s balance bike skillfully featuring a warm wooden fluid form enticing them to jump on and ride.

Brilliantly founded by industrial product designer Liam de la Bedoyere – Bored Eye is a design studio based in Essex, UK and an anagram of Bedoyere. 

“While on holiday, Render Weekly was running a challenge to design an object where the main form gesture is built using a ‘sweep’ command.

I only had an A5 notebook and a pen, so I utilized my time exploring ideas for this interesting challenge and it was rather liberating – with no computers or client meetings, just back to design basics. 

After a few days of sketching, I had the idea for the bike and couldn’t wait to get back to the office and start visualizing!” says Bedoyere. 

Being at crossroads with a mélange of materials from wood to metal as well as plastic – he settled on wood, with its sheer ability to beautifully achieve this innovative products organic flow and due to its aesthetic finish. 

Undeniably practical and removing the need to steer, steam bending plywood would be the only way to achieve this eclectic eye-catching form. 

With a minimalistic Scandinvian feel – its wood grain could further effortlessly guide one’s eye through the ‘sweep’, making the fold even more pronounced and not lost behind its casted shadow.

Additionally, if the wood used in manufaturing is sourced correctly, then this one-of-a-kind object could be an eco-friendly bike with its unique fun look making it an alternative in the market for balance bikes that kids enjoy.
“Children may be the ones to ride the bike, but it’s the parents who buy it for them – so we thought we would get creative with alternative appearances to allure them!” Bedoyere adds.
