Fragrance retailer Flâner will open its first flagship store in Melbourne this month, after launching its first pop-up in Victoria in August. 

Located on Fitzroy’s Gertrude St, the location has been transformed from a barber shop untouched for 60 years. 

The palette designed by local architect Chris Thompson Studio is used throughout the space, and the rhythmic ceiling grid was kept, improved, and used as a highlight. 

The candy poles are wrapped in warm leather sheaths with striped stitching, and the central marble counter acts as a focal point, surrounded by profiled timber cladding, textured paintwork, and softened with brushed metal touches. 

With over 60 oils preserved in glassware that can be freely opened, smelt, and explored by a maturing perfumer’s palate, the business aims to allow clients to learn about and discover smells. There are also several testing places. 

“We wanted to provide people with this space to share the artistic story that matches the scientific formulation behind each creation,” said co-founder Andrew Hardeman. 

Next month, two new candles will be offered for Christmas: Clouds of Cappadocia, a floral fanciful smell, and Oudh x Oud, a warm, spiritual option inspired by Arabic music and the famed agarwood.
