London-based architecture and design studio Bluebottle has created a new, contemporary showroom for Holland & Sherry on Savile Row, London. The two-storey, appointment-only space offers visitors a warm welcome with rich, natural materials and upholstered furniture that subtly nods to the heritage of the Holland & Sherry brand and its prestigious Savile Row location.

The overarching material palette and aesthetic was conceived with the intention to create a space that embraces the wonderfully eclectic, traditional shopfronts on Savile Row while remaining refined and modern, avoiding pastiche. The elegant finish serves as a blank canvas for the display of Holland & Sherry’s tailoring fabrics, as well as hinting at its interiors expertise with a stunning collection of antique furniture, artefacts and curiosities which tell the story of the brand and its history over 180 years. Materials such as the exposed steelwork to the stair, glazing with visible patination and weld marks, as well as the brushed textured grain to the oak display cabinetry, were selected to reflect the depth of quality and the tactility of Holland & Sherry’s fabrics.

Split across two floors, the ground floor of 31 Savile Row accommodates the main Holland & Sherry showroom with shop-window display, along with a meeting space, fitting rooms, and office areas. The more private lower-ground floor houses facilities for tailoring and fitting, as well as further showroom space for invited guests and storage for the numerous fabric samples which make up Holland & Sherry’s full apparel fabric collection.

As established names in the interior design industry, Holland & Sherry and Bluebottle were able to share and combine existing networks in the design community to build a broad team of makers and collaborators for this project, which have each provided specific contributions to the new space:

The main seating areas at both ground and lower ground floor have been furnished with sofas and armchairs by British furniture makers and designers Sedilia using Holland & Sherry cloth.

The marble coffee and meeting tables and credenzas are by Porta Romana who also supplied the feature lighting across both floors in the form of chandeliers and wall and floor lamps, some of which utilise fabrics from Holland & Sherry’s range.

Tillys supplied fabric sliding screens, again using Holland & Sherry cloth, along with a range of state-of-the-art drapery hardware for the meeting spaces and fitting rooms.

The family firm of London-based Wells Interiors showed their unparalleled expertise and knowledge when installing Holland & Sherry’s hand printed wallcoverings and vinyls.

With quality of finish being key to the project, Bluebottle was able to draw upon its network of familiar suppliers and makers for the key design elements in the space, including M-Tech for the feature stair, Furniture by Martin for display cabinetry, Rawside for glazed doors and partitions, Gallery lighting by Atrium Ltd.

Bluebottle’s close working relationship with OW-N Furniture also ensured that the furniture for the meeting and office spaces was carefully selected to ensure the quality of the front-of-house spaces carried through to all areas.

Bluebottle introduced Holland & Sherry to IIS Space Contractors as long-time collaborators, and this existing relationship was instrumental in getting started on site and delivering on time and on budget.

The breadth of collaboration on this project was integral to the finished result and became the defining story – both building on existing working relationships while also establishing new ones which it is hoped will continue to evolve in future collaborations.

For almost 190 years, Holland & Sherry has been supplying some of the finest cloth in the world to prestigious tailors, haute couture designers and luxury brands, with a permanent presence on Savile Row since the late 1970s. Building on its reputation as weavers and merchants of a vast array of apparel fabrics, the establishment of Holland & Sherry Interiors Division afforded the development of a diverse range of fabrics for this sector, as well as other crafted products such as rugs, fabric wall coverings, hand-painted wallpapers, trims and hardware.

The crossover between apparel fabrics and interiors textiles is a story which is integral to Holland & Sherry’s brand and the new showroom celebrates this for the first time. While functioning primarily as an apparel fabric showroom, the showroom at 31 Savile Row will also display complimentary interior fabrics and products to provide a new central London anchor for Holland & Sherry’s Interiors Division, operating in conjunction with the existing showroom at Chelsea Harbour.

The new showroom at 31 Savile Row marks a return to street level for Holland & Sherry, and along with this an opportunity to not only showcase the brand’s collections to the tailoring community, but also to the general public.
