Australian retailer Ally Fashion collapses, will shutter 51 stores immediately

Retailer Ally Fashion has been ordered into liquidation after an application by a landlord for outstanding rent. Founded in 2001, the company expanded its national footprint to 160 stores. Now, 51 stores will close immediately, resulting in the loss of 250 jobs. Staff members of the 109 remaining stores will continue to work in the short term. The Federal Court of Australia appointed Jeff Marsden and Duncan Clubb of BDO Australia as liquidators on February 28.

‘Heartening’: Australian retail sales increase 3.8 per cent in January

Australian retail sales showed improvement in January, with all categories generating positive growth. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), retail sales in the first month of the year increased 3.8 per cent to $37.08 billion from the year-ago period. Other retailing, which includes cosmetics, sports and recreational goods, saw the highest sales growth of 7 per cent as turnover reached $5.90 billion.
