How did you first become interested in industrial design, and what drew you specifically to furniture design?

Francesco Favaretto:

“Growing up in a household where industrial design was the family’s bread and butter, I was naturally drawn to this world of creativity and practicality. My father, Arch. Paolo Favaretto, a renowned designer himself, was instrumental in shaping my understanding of the industry. The allure of furniture design specifically lies in its unique balance of aesthetics and everyday utility.

It is an avenue where one’s creative expression can significantly impact the functional aspects of a person’s life and living space. I was drawn to the opportunity of enhancing people’s experiences through designs that are not only visually appealing but also comfortable, functional, and accessible.”

Could you describe the process of scaling your design from a concept or prototype to large-scale production?

Francesco Favaretto:

“The scaling process from prototype to large-scale production is a careful and detailed one. It starts with an in-depth analysis and understanding of the product’s functionality and manufacturing costs. We then refine the design to ensure its viability for mass production. This involves working closely with manufacturers, understanding their production capacities and limitations, and making the necessary adjustments to the design.

It’s a process of constant negotiation between the ideal design and practical production realities, ensuring the final product retains the essence of the original concept while being manufacturable on a larger scale.”

Francesco Favaretto:

“Sustainability has become an integral part of our design process. We actively seek to incorporate materials that are recycled and recyclable, a principle exemplified in the Ambrogio table, made of EcoAllene®, a material sourced from recycled Tetra Pak cartons.

Beyond the choice of materials, we aim to create products that are timeless and durable, transcending fast-paced fashion trends. This focus on longevity discourages disposable consumption and encourages a more sustainable pattern of use.”

Can you describe some unique challenges and opportunities you’ve encountered while designing for Chinese companies?

Francesco Favaretto:

“Working with Chinese companies has always presented an exciting blend of challenges and opportunities. From a cultural perspective, the Chinese market has unique aesthetic preferences and values that can be distinct from those prevalent in the West. Integrating these cultural nuances into the design while maintaining the essence of our design philosophy has been a rewarding challenge.

From a manufacturing perspective, China’s advanced industrial capabilities offer immense opportunities. They have a high level of efficiency and production capacity, which allows us to implement our designs at a scale and speed that might not be feasible elsewhere.

However, there are also challenges to navigate. For instance, ensuring our commitment to sustainability aligns with manufacturing practices can sometimes be demanding. It requires a mutual understanding and agreement on the use of sustainable materials and processes. There are also logistical aspects to consider, such as communication across different time zones and languages, and understanding the specific regulations of the Chinese market.

Despite these challenges, the opportunity to tap into one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing consumer markets makes designing for Chinese companies a truly rewarding experience.”
