Whole Foods Co-Founder, CEO John Mackey to Retire

Chief Operations Officer Jason Schueler will take his place next fall

Whole Foods Market co-founder and CEO John Mackey has announced he will transition out o fhis CEO role effective Sept. 1, 2022, according to a letter posted on the retailer’s web site. Chief Operating Officer Jason Buechel will become CEO at that time.

“Jason has a number of very special qualities that will help him succeed as our next CEO.  Not only is he extraordinarily intelligent with unusually high integrity, he is also a servant leader who lives and embodies Whole Foods Core Values and Leadership Principles and is fundamentally just a good and loving person,” Mackey wrote.

Schueler joined Whole Foods in 2013 as Global VP and Chief Information Officer and was promoted to Executive VP in 2015. He assumed the role of COO in 2019, where in addition to being responsible for the operations of all Whole Foods stores and facilities, he also oversees technology, supply chain and distribution and Team Member Services.
