A new report from Coresight Research says retailers have announced 4,969 store openings so far in 2021, representing a 58.3 percent increase from the year prior.

In its analysis of the report, Retail Dive noted that Dollar General has far outpaced any other retailer in store openings, representing more than 20 percent of all openings so far this year.

Competing discount concerns including Dollar Tree, Family Dollar and Five Below are next up on the list of retailers who have rapidly expanded their footprints. Foot Locker (109 openings), Signet Jewelers (87), Tractor Supply (80) and Aerie (76) have also significantly beefed up their store bases.

“In brick and mortar, the script has flipped between 2020 and 2021,” Retail Dive writes, observing that store closures exceeded openings by more than 150 percent this time last year.
