Australian luxury department store David Jones will celebrate its 185th anniversary this year with a week of festivities at its stores nationwide.

The retailer opened on May 24, 1838, and claims to be the oldest continuously operating department store in the world, still trading under its original name.

To mark the occasion, customers will be treated to a series of pop-up birthday in-store experiences, performances, photo exhibitions and installations along with complimentary Champagne and sweets.

David Jones CEO, Scott Fyfe, said he is “immensely proud” to be a part of this milestone event.

“We now hold the title of the longest continuously operating department store in the world. A feat only possible thanks to the continuing support of the David Jones customers, team members, and community.”

Customers who spend more than $185 at David Jones’s Elizabeth Street or Bourke Street flagship stores will have the opportunity to spin the digital birthday cake to win from a prize pool which includes a luxury handbag from Chloe and a Le Creuset prize.
