Vacancies surge as labour shortages cripple the retail industry

As retailers begin recruitment drives ahead of the peak holiday shopping season, new data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows there were 46,100 job vacancies available in retail in August. This is an increase of 5800 vacancies – or 14.4 per cent – compared to May this year. Overall, job vacancies declined 2.1 per cent but the retail sector still struggles to attract workers.

Online sales drive profits for Toy ‘R’ Us

Children’s goods retailer Toys ‘R’ Us says it has achieved significant and sustained organic growth from both e-commerce and wholesale segments, relaunching its website in the UK ahead of Christmas. For the year to July 31, sales from continuing operations were up 74 per cent to $37.9 million while gross profit rose 93 per cent to $8 million.
