Virgil Abloh designs “rethought” home water dispenser for Evian

(Re)new supposedly requires 60% less packaging than the equivalent amount of water in bottled form, thanks to its five litre “bubble” concept.

Water brand Evian has revealed its latest work with designer Virgil Abloh – an “eco-conscious” in-home water dispenser.

The (Re)new has been designed with the aim of reducing plastic, while still providing customers with mineral water.

“Evian as an interior decoration”

The dispenser features an “innovative water bubble” design, Evian explains. Bubbles are placed atop a “beautiful contemporary” base unit.

The brand says the minimalist design from Abloh has been developed to “reinforce the iconicity of Evian as an interior decoration”.

As the water level in the bubble goes down, the container collapses in on itself. This is because of the thin “skin” of recycled plastic that makes up its surface. The brand likens the “ever-evolving” shape of the bubble to a changing sculpture.

“Keep virgin plastic out of nature and within the economy”

Each bubble holds five litres of mineral water, and uses around 60% less plastic than a standard 1.5 litre Evian bottle. Two bubbles will retail for £7.99.

Of the plastic that is used, the brand says the Re(new) only features 100% recycled plastic. This helps “reduce carbon emissions and keep virgin plastic out of nature and within the economy”, Evian says.

This action is in support of the brand’s commitment to circularity by 2025. Also in pursuit of this goal, Evian unveiled a label-less bottle design last year. (The packaging solution is shortlisted for this year’s 3D structural packaging Design Week Award.)

Recent Abloh collaborations

Abloh has worked with Evian as the brand’s creative advisor for sustainable innovation design since 2018.

Last year, the designer released a collection of glass bottles for the brand with water bottle manufacturer Soma. The intention is that this latest Re(new) product is paired with the bottle collection.

This is the latest in a series of high-profile collaborations for Abloh. Earlier this year, the designer reimagined a classic Dieter Rams-designed wall unit for Braun in celebration of its 100th birthday.

Other Abloh collaborations nclude a rug design for IKEA and a bottle design for Moët & Chandon.
