Metcash sales and profit surge as Covid’s impact weakens

Metcash has reported a surge in underlying EBIT of 63.8 per cent against pre-Covid levels of three years ago in a result CEO Doug Jones described as “a pleasing half”. In the six months to October 31, group revenue was up 8.2 per cent year on year to $7.7 billion, with underlying profit reaching $255.1 million, up 10.3 per cent on-year. Profit after tax of $125.7 million was up by 182.9 per cent compared with three years ago.

New York’s Fifth Avenue Has World’s Priciest Retail Rents

An 11-block slice of New York’s Fifth Avenue has displaced a shopping district in Hong Kong as the world’s most expensive street on which to rent retail space. That’s according to real estate consulting firm Cushman & Wakefield’s newly released “ Main Streets Across the World ” report, which said rents on Fifth Avenue (between 49th and 60th streets) averaged $2,000 per square foot/per year.

Monash survey predicts Australian retail Christmas trends

To combat rising inflation and cost of living pressures, Australian shoppers have commenced their Christmas shopping months earlier, according to a new study. The annual Christmas retail trends report from the Australian Consumer and Retail Studies (ACRS) unit of Monash Business School has revealed 55 per cent of shoppers have now started their shopping one or more months in advance while 45 per cent initiated it in the four weeks leading up to Christmas.

McDonald’s Launches Small-Format Concept

McDonald’s (Chicago) is testing its first small-format store designed to capture more digital, take-out and delivery business. Located outside Fort Worth, Texas, the store features an order-ahead lane that allows customers to skip the drive-thru lane and pick up their orders via a food and beverage conveyor. Inside the restaurant, there’s a delivery pick-up room for couriers, as well as kiosks where customers can place their orders to go.
