Australian per capita online spending set new record last year

Australia’s retail e-commerce generated US$45.7 billion (A$68.01 billion) last year with the average Australian spending US$1766 (A$2628), according to data from Euromonitor.

The market research company’s e-commerce solution analysis covers more than 400 retailers across 12 countries and claims to account for at least 80 per cent of total online sales.

The per capita data was achieved by dividing the market size by the total population.

Across categories, Australia’s alcoholic beverages online market was estimated at $707.6 million, while online dairy product and alternatives market sales reched $603 million.

Online spending on skincare rose 27.8 per cent and accounted for $1.1 billion last year with colour cosmetics achieving 17.1 per cent of sales and fragrances 16.6 per cent.

Tim Foulds, the head of insights at Euromonitor International, said: “In Australia, post-pandemic consumers are becoming more mindful of their product choices, origin, and the environmental cost of their food. They also seek budgetary options in the short to medium term.”
