French fashion designer, Manfred Thierry Mugler, who was behind designs worn by Beyonce and Lady Gaga, has passed away, aged 73.

“We are devastated to announce the passing of Mr Manfred Thierry Mugler on Sunday, January 23. May his soul Rest In Peace,” said a statement on Mugler’s official social media accounts.

The cause of death was reported natural causes, according to his agent.

Born in 1948, the renowned designer was known for his architectural, hyperfeminine, and theatrical approach to haute couture. Mugler introduced his fashion brand in 1973 with his first fashion collection, ‘Cafe de Paris’. His designs were dressed by David Bowie, Diana Ross, and Duran Duran among many others during his career in the fashion industry.

The designer retired from the brand in 2002 before returning in 2013 as the creative adviser. Some of his famous pieces include a motorcycle-inspired bodice at Mugler spring/summer ’92 worn by Niki Taylor and Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala look in 2019.

“It is with deep sadness and emotion that we were informed of Manfred Thierry Mugler’s death – an exceptional creative genius who will leave his mark on French fashion and beauty,” L’Oreal Groupe said on social media. “On behalf of L’Oreal Groupe, we send our sincere condolences to his family & friends.”

“I will miss you Thierry Mugler, this was a wonderful time in our lives,” said Diana Ross on her Twitter account.

Mugler’s designs were recently featured in an exhibition at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris entitled “Thierry Mugler, Couturissime”.
