Macy’s (New York) announced it plans to raise its minimum pay to $15 an hour by May 2022, Bloomberg reports.

The department store retailer also plans to create an education benefit program in partnership with Guild Education, which aims to cover workers’ books and tuition costs as well as other related fees. It will also cover high school completion courses, bachelor’s degrees, professional certificates and English language classes.

Macy’s average base pay will become more than $17 an hour after the pay increase begins.

Danielle Kirgan, Chief Transformation and Human Resources Officer, Macy’s, reportedly said in an interview: “In the job market people have choices. They can be choosy about who they work with and how long they work at a particular company … We recognize that choice. We want to make sure we’re attracting a colleague that wants to be able to improve their skills.”
