Bringing function, color and play to ergonomics

Ekstrem by Terje Ekstrøm for Varier is not merely a chair, but rather a stand-alone object representing one of Norway’s first postmodern designs.

A sitting experience that can only be described as out of the ordinary – ‘Ekstrem’ by Terje Ekstrøm for Varier is not merely a chair, but rather a stand-alone object representing one of Norway’s first postmodern designs.

Portraying a new generation of designers who challenged the ideas of Scandinavian design – Ekstrøm’s work brilliantly contributed to a new vitality and independence to the Norwegian design scene of the 70’s and 80’s, at a time of significant cultural and social change.

Although he is seen as one of Norway’s first postmodern designers, his original output and its mediation are connected to the ideals of the modern movement and later pop culture.

Based in Oslo, Norway – Varier is a furniture company skillfully designing and producing high-quality ergonomic chairs that invite people to move while they sit.

Their one-of-a-kind products have led the way in innovation and inspired creativity in workspaces and homes across the globe.

“We believe that we can live healthier and more sustainable lives by being in balance – a mixture of stability and movement.

Our versatile collection of chairs reflect our commitment to human-centered design, focusing on people’s needs as a starting point” says Varier

Seamlessly embodying a steel frame covered in soft foam and woolen knit upholstery – Ekstrem is available in eye-catching colorways in Knit, a bespoke woolen upholstery textile by Devold.

Knitted from one continuous thread, it effortlessly provides an elasticity which is essential when fitted to the chair’s alluring and playful organic shape.

The knitted fabric is soft and breathable and additionally features a beautiful classic quadratic pattern.
