Twenty years ago, Joseph Badr founded Dspa, a holistic dental surgery that doubles as a calming health spa. Now, he heads up Dsmile, a direct-to-consumer dental care brand marrying sustainable design with minimalist design. Here, Badr talks through the challenges he has faced over his long career, as well as how he uses personal boundaries to get the best out of each facet of his life. Inside Retail: Tell me about your career journey. How did you get into the retail industry? Joseph Badr
seph Badr: My career journey has been an exciting and fulfilling one. After studying dentistry and working in the field for several years, I realised that there was a need to demystify dentistry and reduce barriers to access to dental services.
So I started Dspa, the first dental spa in Australia that focused on prevention and cosmetics, which was a huge success.
However, I also noticed compliance issues with dental care at home and the environmental impact of dental products. To address these issues, I decided to embark on a new venture called Dsmile.
Our company focuses on finding solutions to these problems through design to drive habit change, and providing eco-friendly dental products that are both effective and sustainable.
It’s been a challenging but rewarding journey, and I am excited to see where it takes me next.
IR: What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in your career and how have you dealt with them?
JB: Managing a team and executing plans were the hardest challenges I had to face, especially when time and resources are limited.
One of the biggest challenges is finding the time to focus on both tasks. I had to find the balance between managing the team and executing our plans, which can be difficult when there are competing priorities.
Additionally, managing a team requires strong communication skills, the ability to delegate tasks effectively, and the ability to motivate team members. This is something that I’ve had to develop over the years. I find it important that everyone is on the same page and working towards the same goals.
Finally, executing plans requires attention to detail and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Prioritising tasks, delegating effectively, and communicating clearly are essential skills in order to overcome these challenges and achieve success in managing their team and executing plans.

I also find that collaborating with local businesses in the same space is helpful for sustainability. By working together, we can share resources and ideas to reduce our environmental impact.
Having a mentor for financial advice has been invaluable. I can turn to them for guidance and support whenever I need it. Overall, these resources and relationships have been instrumental in my career journey, which is something I highly recommend.
IR: What’s your approach to work-life balance?
JB: Achieving a healthy work-life balance is crucial and the most important thing I value is being present in all aspects of my life.
Since I prioritise family, work, and social life, it’s important to find a balance that allows me to fully commit to each area without sacrificing the others.
This may involve setting boundaries, prioritising tasks, and being intentional with my time management.
