The Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF) will return this year to Darwin Convention Centre between August 8 to 13 to celebrate indigenous art, culture and couture.

The event – which is on its 17th iteration – comprises an indigenous art fair and two indigenous fashion projects public events called Country to Couture and the National Indigenous Fashion Awards (NIFA).

DAAF Foundation executive director, Claire Summers, said the organisers are proud to offer the fair as a “hybrid event” this year which will be available both online and in-person.

“With more than 1500 Indigenous artists and designers from some of Australia’s most remote communities journeying to the fair, visitors can learn first-hand from participants through cultural workshops, discussions by industry leaders and demonstrations.”

NT government minister for major events, Paul Kirby said the event draws art lovers from around the globe to see the works of leading Indigenous creatives.

If visitors can’t travel to Darwin, Summers says the online feature will provide an opportunity to engage and experience art virtually.

This year’s Country to Couture lineup features 23 collections spread across two runway shows from both emerging and acclaimed artists and designers.

Likewise, the NIFA awards gathered 60 nominations shortlisted across six award categories, which will be presented in an intimate ceremony at the Darwin Deckchair Cinema.

Attendees can also purchase First Nations’ artworks from more than 70 participating art centres with 100 per cent of revenue going back to artists and their communities.
