Penny Weber, an Australian entrepreneur, fashion designer and disability advocate, has produced the country’s first ‘Seated Jeans’ as part of an adaptable clothing line, The Shapes United.  

The Seated Jeans are intended for those with restricted movement, with the concept born from a conversation Weber had with a client at a Melbourne Disability Expo.

According to Weber, despite being one of the most popular items of apparel in the Western world, jeans are neither practical nor even wearable for some people with impairments.

Shapes United is making this wardrobe staple available in sizes ranging from XS to 7XL. The jeans have adaptable flat seams, no tags, and a Velcro closure. They have a high back, an elastic waist, and a shorter leg shape with a fashionable twist. 

Customers can also request additional adaptable features including a push-stud opening, side zips, or catheter access. 

“These adjustments ensure the jeans are comfortable for people who spend long periods of time in one position,” said Weber.

“Pockets can leave pressure sores, and traditional jeans don’t fit properly for people who are seated. These look just like everyday jeans, but they are thoughtfully, sustainably and locally made.”
