The Irish government has published draft regulations for a deposit return scheme (DRS), following efforts in all the United Kingdom countries to introduce similar measures.

The NFRN trade association, which has members in the Republic of Ireland, welcomed the move, although it noted that many of the details have yet to be decided, including the level of the deposit.

The regulations will place a number of obligations on retailers, including itemising the deposit on all till receipts, registering with a scheme administrator and taking back empty containers.

The NFRN’s head of political engagement, Adrian Roper, said: “We are pleased this important scheme is moving in the right direction.

“We will continue to engage with ministers and the scheme administrators, when appointed, to ensure DRS in Ireland is robust and works for all retailers.”

In the UK, Scotland has the most advanced plans for a DRS scheme, although its start has been put back and a firm date is yet to be announced.
