The NFRN trade body has backed an effort by distributors Smiths News and Menzies to alleviate the shortage of drivers by displaying posters in-store or in another suitable place to attract new drivers.

The posters will be distributed tomorrow (14 October) in the tote boxes the distributors use for deliveries.

NFRN head of news Brian Murphy said: “This national driver shortage has come as a surprise to us all and is expected to continue until at least Christmas, potentially becoming more acute as the need for delivery drivers increases.

“Maintaining the seven-day distribution of newspapers is vital, and the NFRN is happy to again play its part in supporting the smooth continuation of the supply chain and again prove its resilience to whatever pressures it faces.

“Placing the posters in-store or in local communities will raise awareness of the urgent need for more delivery drivers.”
