Romance Was Born takes home top award at Australian Fashion Laureate

Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales of Romance Was Born have been named Australia’s fashion designers of the year at the Australian Fashion Laureate.

The event, which seeks to recognise and highlight the talent across Australia’s fashion industry, also awarded Maara Collective’s Julie Shaw as Indigenous Designer of the Year, while Bassike’s Deborah Sams and Mary Lou Ryan took home Sustainable Innovation of the Year.

“The Australian Fashion Laureate provides an important platform to celebrate the success of Australia’s designers and fashion talent, wile demonstrating that our industry’s creativity and connectivity can continue to flourish despite extraordinary challenges,” said Natalie Xenita, Vice President and Managing Director of IMG’s fashion events and properties in Asia Pacific.

“In striving for change and innovation, today’s honourees have played a significant role in futureproofing our industry and reinforcing the cultural impact of fashion both within and beyond Australia.”

Also recognised at the event was Grace Lillian Lee, founder of First Nations Fashion & Design, who took home the Carla Zampatti Award for Excellence in Leadership award, industry veteran Linda Jackson AO, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Spell’s Elizabeth Abegg and Isabelle Pennefather, who were named People’s Choice.
